Deon graduated from the Singapore Management University and served his practice training period with the firm. He then joined the firm as an Associate after being admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore.
Deon’s areas of practice include intellectual property, technology, data protection and corporate law.
On the intellectual property front, Deon is primarily involved in trade mark and patent matters. These include assisting with trade mark and patent applications and registrations in Singapore and abroad, along with intellectual property licensing and assignments. He has rendered advice to clients on the impact of Singapore’s copyright law on their business and advised clients on the intellectual property considerations for their licensing and distribution agreements.
Deon has experience navigating the regulatory requirements under the Payment Services Act. In particular, he has rendered legal opinions on the legal status of several “cryptocurrencies” in Singapore, which include Bitcoin and Ethereum. He has also assisted clients with preparing their applications to the Monetary Authority of Singapore for a license under the Payment Services Act.
He is actively involved with data protection matters and has reviewed clients’ data protection policies to ensure compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2012. More recently, he is part of the team at Gateway providing the Data Protection as a Service, which involves setting up a basic level of data protection capabilities for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Social Service Agencies.
He has also assisted with various corporate transactions such as drafting shareholder agreements, distribution agreements and joint venture agreements.
Deon is fluent in English and Mandarin.
